Quote Me: Simply Unbelievable

07-28-08
"The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today are Christians who acknowledge Jesus with their lips and walk out the door and deny Him by their lifestyles. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable."

A quote from author, friar, priest, contemplative, and speaker Brennan Manning.

A Shared Experience Of Art

07-14-08
I read this in Relevant magazine, July/August Issue 34, and it expresses exactly the way I feel about the strict separation between Christian culture and mainstream society. It was written by Jeffrey Overstreet...
.....I've found redemptive insights and moments of piercing brilliance in places that I'd been told were off-limits.....I have a strange compulsion to sit down between Christian culture and secular society, trying to help them understand each other-and, ultimately, God-better through a shared experience of art.
The more I apply myself to this, the more I realize that this compulsion grows from having learned that my own assumptions were wrong and my view too narrow. Now I want to understand more and apprehend beauty wherever I can find it. It's amazing to see how the power of art has led me to growth and understanding.....

Matthew 25 Network

07-14-08
From Matthew25.org:
Matthew 25 Network is a community of Christians - Catholic, Protestant, Pentecostal and Evangelical—inspired by the Gospel mandate to put our faith into action to care for our neighbor. We believe that people of faith should actively participate in the political process as an important avenue for social change.
We come together as individual believers to support candidates for public office who share the values of the Matthew 25 Network: promoting life with dignity, caring for the least of these, strengthening and supporting families, stewardship of God's Creation, working for peace and justice at home and abroad and promoting the common good.

It looks like the full website isn't up and running yet, but they have a sign-up form to be notified of when it is. Might be worth keeping an eye on...

Movie Review: Facing The Giants

07-12-08
While searching for a blog topic, I thought I'd pull from my profile and do a review on the movie "Facing The Giants." This 2006 theatrical film is rated PG for "thematic elements." This emotion filled drama follows the story of Grant Taylor, a defeated coach faced with leading a losing football team, angry parents, a doubting friend, family stress, and a long list of additional depressing life challenges. Crying out for help, Coach Taylor feels that he is surrounded by "giants of fear and failure." In a desperate and dark time of his life, he changes his team's philosophy to honor God in all they do, on the football field and off. And, well you might want to view the movie to see how it turns out! :) I highly recommend this film and it gets a "9.5" out of "10" on the Woo Dig It scale for positive real life messages and symbolism. It is a family friendly Christian film, but non Christians will enjoy it also for it's great story, drama, positive messages, and good acting performances from unknown actors. The movie also contains a very good soundtrack that I recommend as well, a great compliment to the film. Another important note: you do not have to be a sports fan to like this movie. I know little about football and still really enjoyed it. Football fans will even catch an acting cameo by a real live professional football coach, you try to spot it! It is rare to find an upbeat and uplifting film sometimes, and Facing The Giants definitely upholds that! Go rent it, share a bowl of popcorn with friends and family, and ENJOY!
